NY GOP Centrists Surge in the Polls

Randy Altschuler, a Republican businessman on Long Island, remains in a tight race against Democratic incumbent Tim Bishop. One campaign source tells FrumForum that an internal poll taken within the last week shows Altschuler within two points. Bishop’s campaign is desperately bringing in the big guns, reportedly asking Andrew Cuomo, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden to campaign and fundraise in the dying weeks of the campaign.

Ist Congressional District: Tim Bishop v. Randy Altschuler

When asked to name the most important issues, Randy Altschuler replied, "Jobs and taxes." The challenger called for extending the Bush tax cuts "for everybody," and cited figures showing the percentage on Long Island of those earning more than $250,000 lies between 9 and 14 percent. Altschuler also supports providing tax incentives for small businesses to help create more jobs.

Election 2010: Altschuler Hopes To Unseat Incumbent, Balance the Budget

Randy Altschuler: “I have lived the American dream, but I’m worried about changes that are happening in this country that are going to prevent future generations from achieving that dream.”

His solution is to prop up the private sector by cutting government spending, lowering taxes and peeling back “red tape” that he contends makes it difficult for businesses to operate.

Final Pitch: Bishop vs. Altschuler: Candidates make one last argument for Hauppauge's support on Election Day.

Randy Altschuler:

"...I've created over 700 jobs in the United States, so I know how to create jobs. I've met and managed a budget. I'm raising a family – I have a son that's 3 – so I can understand firsthand the challenges facing families right now.

Tim Bishop is not voting with the people of this district. He's voting with his party. Hence his 97 percent voting rate with Nancy Pelosi. He has supported a slew of legislation that is not in the best interest of the district."

Randy Altschuler finished by stating he could document the 125 votes Mr. Bishop had made to raise taxes and said he stood for change in Washington, to help business, and keep money here rather than "pay for programs we can't afford."

"If you want to continue the policies of the Obama and Pelosi administration -- if you want Obamacare, cap and trade, car check and further bailouts then you should vote for Tim Bishop." The loud applause and cheers of many in the room indicated that they planned to do that.

Letter From Suffolk County Conservative Party Chairman Ed Walsh To Candidate Christopher Cox

Dear Christopher:

...Your wild claims that Randy Altschuler is buying this election ring hollow when one reads press reports that credit your uncle, Howard Cox, with donating $50,OOO to a local GOP town committee in the congressional district. A very generous gift, when you realize that Howard Cox lives in Massachusetts and merely summers in the Hamptons. But, it’s just one of many “donations” your family has given in their misguided attempt to purchase you a congressional seat.

And, while we are on the topic of wild claims you have made, let’s take a look at your meritless attempt to force an Opportunity to Ballot on the Conservative Party line. Simply put; you failed.

In the process, you attempted to smear the Suffolk County Conservative Party, its members and Executive Committee and even well respected Supreme Court Judge. The state Supreme Court ruled against you nevertheless; citing a string of technical deficiencies in your petitions, as well as fake signatures and paid petitioners who perpetrated fraud in your craven attempt to muddy the electoral waters.

Your lack of accomplishments and your habit of stretching the truth and refusing to be forthright are the reasons you did not receive the backing of the Suffolk County Conservative Party.

The New York Republican establishment was handed a searing lesson in the perils of top-down machine politics last November.

Today, it's the case of New York's first congressional district, located in Long Island's Suffolk County. Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop is in his fourth term in this battleground district, which George W. Bush won in 2004. He is under fire for party-line votes on everything from stimulus to health care. This is the sort of seat the GOP needs in order to gain a majority this fall.

The party looked set to do well. Businessman Randy Altschuler has been campaigning for more than a year on fiscal conservatism and pro-growth policies. The party banked him with strong fund raising and the endorsements of everyone from House GOP Whip Eric Cantor to local officials. He did face some competitors, including George Demos, a former SEC attorney, and Gary Berntsen, a former CIA official. New York has both Republican Party and Conservative Party ballot lines. In the usual course of things, Messrs. Altschuler, Demos and Berntsen would have engaged in a bottom-up competition for the committee votes and endorsements of the parties. One candidate would usually scoop both by spring, leaving him largely free to focus on Mr. Bishop.

Enter new state GOP party chairman Ed Cox—or rather, his son. Chris Cox, a lawyer, is a long-time resident of Manhattan. In January, however, he changed his voting address to his uncle's house in the Hamptons and announced for NY 1. The airdrop of the party boss's son caused an uproar.

Mr. Altschuler in May thumped Mr. Cox for the Conservative Party nomination, yet Mr. Cox keeps pursuing the Republican Party line. The Suffolk County GOP, under Ed Cox's watchful eye, initially considered anointing his son. But grass-roots pushback has instead resulted in an open Sept. 14 primary for the Republican slot.

The Best Stimulus? Spend Less, Borrow Less

A fall in investment is normal in recessions. The problem this time is that corporate profits are rebounding fast, yet companies are extremely reluctant to reinvest them in new projects. “What I see out there is apprehension,” says Randy Altschuler, founder of CloudBlue, a recycler of used electronics equipment, and a Republican candidate for a seat in the House of Representatives from Eastern Long Island. “The owners of small companies I talk to are especially worried about health-care costs. Hence, they’re holding back hiring and capital investment.”

Obama malinterpreta a Keynes

$13 Trillion and Counting: Our National Debt Grows and Tim Bishop Remains Silent

Randy Altschuler's Blog: Our national debt hovers at a staggering $13 trillion and over the weekend President Obama asked Nancy Pelosi and her allies in Congress to authorize another $50 billion in new spending. If we care about our nation's fiscal well being, the reckless and dangerous spending must end.
